Handwork Job Opening in Edmonton

Position Summary

The Handwork/Painting/Woodwork Specialist is an active member of the , and works closely with the Class Teacher to integrate Waldorf methods with other current best practices to align curriculum as prescribed by the Province of Alberta. Examples of handworks typically covered may include: knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, felting, sewing, art as well as woodworking for the older grades.

Qualifications:
  • A valid Alberta Teachers Certificate and University Bachelor of Education Degree.
  • Genuine warmth, joy and enthusiasm in working with children
  • A desire and willingness to pursue professional development and or applicable Waldorf training.
  • Excellent class management skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; approachable for students, parents and colleagues.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task with confidence, with superb time-management.
  • Excellent resolution skills.
  • Willingness and proven ability to work within a community environment..
  • Good computer skills.
  • Knowledge of appropriate handwork, painting and woodwork skills.
  • Knowledge, experience or willingness to learn Waldorf pedagogy is preferred.
Responsibilities:
  • Working in collaboration with the Class Teacher, evaluate each child’s academic, emotional and social progress and report to parents regularly through parent teacher interviews, mid-term reports, end of year reports and meeting with parents as required.
  • For FTE 0.5 or more, attend all department and full faculty meetings and assist with open houses and other school events
  • Ensure that all Equivalent Learning Outcome documentation is up to date as required by Alberta Education.
  • Providing reports for parents during parent teacher interviews, end of year reports.
  • Supervision duties as required.
  • Faculty Committee work as required
  • Attend weekly faculty meetings, school events, seasonal fairs, in-service/PD days, conferences and
  • summer training.
  • Ensure that all Equivalent Learning Outcome documentation is up to date as required by Alberta Education.
Key areas of accountability: 1. Curriculum:
  • Ensure that all curriculum content is in accordance with Waldorf Education and its principles.
  • Collaborate with Class Teacher to ensure that all requirements for the classroom curriculum are met for each grade. Responsible for finding new and appropriate ways of meeting the curriculum requirements for each specific class.
  • Participate in curriculum and pedagogical review of the program.
2. Extra-Curricular:
  • Responsible for planning and monitoring outings and class trips that support the curriculum, according to WISE School policy.
  • Responsible for celebrating appropriate festivals and co-coordinating student activities that supports the curriculum, when required.
  • Outdoor supervision, recess supervision, and on-call assignments as required.
  • Assist with open houses and other school events.
3. Student Assessment:
  • Collaborate with the Class Teacher to evaluate each student’s academic, emotional and social progress on an ongoing basis.
  • In conjunction with the Class Teacher, report to parents regularly through parent teacher interviews, end of year reports and meeting with parents as required.
  • Where necessary, liaise with colleagues and other professionals to address individual children’s particular needs.
4. Relationship with parents:
  • Participate in parent evenings to report on the class and to inform and correspond with parents
  • Respond to parent questions/concerns in a timely and professional manner.
  • Available for parent interviews as required.
5. Relationship with WESE:
  • Compile and provide information and documentation to WESE to ensure that the WISE school meets Alberta Education compliance under the Education Act.
  • Participate in visioning and planning for the development and growth of the WISE.
  • Provide input and feedback on day-to-day operations, identifying improvements and efficiencies in the running of the WISE school.
  • Work with WESE to create a nurturing and community-focused environment for the WISE.
6. Relationship with Faculty
  • Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings with Class and supply teachers.
  • Attend WISE Board/Faculty meeting annually.
  • Attend summer training and meetings as agreed upon with WESE.

Teachers are guided by the philosophy and procedures outlined in WISE Agreement Between Faculty Members, the WISE Policy Handbook and by the Codes of Conduct and Discipline Policy and the principles of Waldorf education, goals for the teacher, and administrative responsibilities of the teacher in working with youngchildren. Teachersfocusonthestudentsandfamiliestheyserveandarecommittedtoworkingwith colleagues through dialogue and support. The Specialist Teacher works in collaboration with the Class Teacher, and is accountable to The Waldorf Education Society of Edmonton.
