PURPOSE: Reporting to the Healthy Families Program Manager/Senior Nurse, the Community Health Dietitian will be responsible for providing nutrition counseling, and administrative support to the team. This position will work in a variety of locations and programs including the Cowichan Maternity Clinic, Healthiest Babies, and the Ts’ewulhtun Health Centre. This is a 21 hour per week, term position ending on or about April 2, 2021.
Complete nutritional assessment of clients
Develop nutrition plan, inclusive of short and long term goals, for clients
Provide nutritional advice to clients and other internal and external programs, focusing on pre/post-natal, infants, and children
Measure and track infant weight and size and discuss any concerns with family & Community Health Nurse
Develop program session curriculum, prepare program activities and facilitate program sessions
Debrief with staff regarding outcome of session and conduct formal evaluation of program sessions with participants and staff
Organize and prepare children and adult program sessions around a variety of topics
Co-facilitate family and children programs
Develop publications and documents as needed, such as posters, newsletter inserts, and recipes
Attend monthly department and weekly team meetings
Refer clients to internal and external resources when appropriate
Contribute to reporting documents regarding services provided and clients serviced
Attend community events and programs to advertise program services and educate members on nutritional issues
Participate in a variety of internal and external committees and working groups
Other related duties as required
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (Please attach all required documents)
Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Science and completion of an accredited dietetic internship program
Member of the College of Dietitians of British Columbia
3 years community dietitian experience
Certification in First Aid / CPR-C / Foodsafe
Experience working in a First Nations community is essential, and a willingness to learn about culture, customs, and traditions of Cowichan people
BC Drivers’ License and reliable vehicle
Criminal Record Check
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of Cowichan culture, customs, and traditions
Knowledge health issues that face First Nations peoples
Knowledge of internal and external community resources
Ability to create nutrition-based programs based on individual needs, including diabetes, heart disease, allergies etc
Well-developed written, oral, interpersonal and organizational skills
Able to foster and build relationships within an aboriginal population
Time management with the ability to multitask different tasks simultaneously
