Technical Project Manager Job Opening in Toronto

JMIR Publications, a small but rapidly growing publisher of peer-reviewed STM journals with an emphasis on medicine, health, and technology titles, is seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated Technical Project Manager. We are a rapidly growing open access publisher (Growth500 company - one of the fastest-growing companies in Canada) with a strong social mission: To transform scholarly communication, and to make health and medical information available to people when they need it. While our primary users and clients are academic authors and researchers, we are increasingly developing innovative products and services for other user groups such as patients and consumers.

We are seeking enthusiastic, energetic, and intelligent individuals for our Technical Project Manager position to oversee the development of our manuscript management and publishing system, and related projects.

  • Analyze, plan and develop requirements and standards in reference to scheduled projects
  • Assist with priority setting
  • Assign and oversee the daily tasks of technical personnel while ensuring all members are actively working toward established milestones
  • Hold regular technical team meetings to determine progress and address any questions or challenges regarding projects
  • Gather requirements, and determine and define clear deliverables, roles and responsibilities for technical staff members required for specific projects or initiatives
  • Research and evaluate hardware and software technology options and weigh the cost/benefit analysis when making large purchases on behalf of the company
  • Recruit and train exceptional employees to fulfill posted positions within the technical department
  • Update and maintain all production technologies ensuring proper maintenance and installation
  • Establish and implement training processes and strategies for all technical personnel in coordination with the development lead.
  • Making sure all stakeholders are informed, and manage internal and external documentation
  • Ensure and oversee testing and quality assurance.
  • Ensure adherence to best practices in coding and deployment workflows.
  • Assist with performance review of developers.


  • Bachelor's degree in Computer science or related technical degree
  • Professional Project Management Certification from an accredited institution preferred
  • Demonstrated understanding of Project Management processes, strategies and methods
  • Experience mentoring, coaching and developing rising talent in the technology department
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills and experience establishing guidelines in these areas for others
  • Strong sense of personal accountability regarding decision-making and supervising department teams
  • Experience working in a high-level collaborative environment and promoting a teamwork mentality
  • Managerial experience applying analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to predict challenges and seek to proactively head-off obstacles
  • Outstanding interpersonal and oral/written communication skills


  • At least 5 years’ experience in project management, business analysis, testing and the software development lifecycle
  • Strong commitment to professional client service excellence
  • Excellent oral, written, and visual communication skills
  • Strong collaboration, negotiation, and leadership skills
  • Experience using MySQL with the ability to understand, optimize, write queries
  • Experience with CI/CD tools like DeployBot, GitHub Actions, and containerized architecture
  • Experience with Asana and Slack would be an asset
  • Project management certification - Scrum Master
  • Experience performing unit and integration testing
  • Interest in scholarly communication, open access publication, and open science would be an asset


Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: $70,000.00 to $95,000.00 /year
