Bioethcist Job Opening in Toronto

Come join the largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital, as well as one of the world’s leading research centres in the area of addiction and mental health, with this exciting opportunity as the Bioethicist at the (CAMH).

Reporting to the Director, Inter-professional Practice the Bioethicist provides leadership to CAMH staff, clients and families on ethical issues; maintains a comprehensive Bioethics Program that includes ethics consultation, support and guidance in ethical decision-making; assists in the development and review of policies and guidelines relating to clinical bioethics issues; facilitates bioethics educational and research initiatives. You will support a variety of organizational committees and working groups including the Quality of Care Committee and Research Ethics Board. You will lead the Quality Projects Ethics Review (QPER) program, advance the Clinical Practice Dilemma Series initiative, support its integration in clinical care, and participate in the continuous development and evaluation of the ethics program.

You will work collaboratively with clinical program leadership, Patient and Family Experience team including the Client Relations Officer, legal counsel, and others to develop policies, initiatives, and tools to support ethical decision-making at all levels of the organization. You will also have opportunities to participate in the Joint Centre for Bioethics (JCB) Clinical, Organizational and Research Ethics (CORE) Network, JCB Fellowship Program and other JCB activities. There is tremendous opportunity to develop a program of research and scholarship focused on mental health ethics in this role. You will support and contribute to a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, promotes dignity and respect, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable legislative and regulatory requirements. This position is based at 1001 Queen Street and will have accountabilities across all sites. CAMH is affiliated with the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will possess:

  • Graduate degree in Bioethics (e.g., a Doctorate, or a Master's Degree) or equivalent combination of education and/or experience;
  • Clinical ethics experience in a hospital or other healthcare environment;
  • Demonstrated skills in communication, consulting, teaching, facilitation, interpersonal skills/relationship building, team building, and educational presentations;
  • A demonstrable track record of bioethics research and scholarship;
  • Ability to be self-directed and a collaborative team member;
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to consistently work well with all levels of the interprofessional team;
  • Training and experience in conducting independent ethics consultations;
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in setting achievable work goals, completing projects and meeting deadlines;
  • Knowledge or experience with ethical issues relating to mental health and addiction;
  • Effective skills in mediation and conflict resolution;
  • Prepared to address a range of ethics challenges encountered within the continuum of care from acute care to compassionate care for the dying within a large, complex health care environment;
  • Working knowledge of Provincial, Federal and International regulations and guidelines for the ethical conduct for research involving humans;
  • Working knowledge of mental health legislation;
  • Experience in program development and management and excellent attention to detail;
  • Experience serving on a Research Ethics Board where review included mental health and addiction protocols an asset;
  • Completion of Tri-Council Research Ethics Tutorial, required;
  • Completion of negotiation and/or mediation training an asset;
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written skills);
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse teams and stakeholders;
  • Client-focused and able to excel in a diverse work environment;
  • Eligible for status-only appointment in a relevant faculty at the University of Toronto and membership in the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics.
  • Bilingualism in French/English or proficiency in a second language is an asset
