DIRECTOR, MEDICAL AFFAIRS
is currently seeking a Director of Medical Affairs. The successful candidate will be fluent in both English and French, have a PharmD, PhD or MD degree plus significant experience in medical affairs activities to include but not limited to strategic medical affairs planning activities, commercial interface collaboration and medical communications. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of experience in medical affairs activities, robust experience in KOL management activities and have a strong patient and customer focus in daily activities. In addition, this individual will possess a strong work ethic and a commitment to excellence and innovation.
This position is responsible for providing medical and clinical support activities for the commercialization of products and for the development strategy and implementation of KOL activities, medical information services, publications, research, and field operations that drive Medical Affairs initiatives. This position is located in Redwood City, CA.
Leads the medical strategic framework for the products within the portfolio and vaccine business unit globally
R&D – liaise with global to obtain sites for clinical trials, oversee Phase IV requests, input into protocols etc.
Leads efforts in recognizing and integrating substantive relationships with KOLs in
specific therapeutic areas of interest to , to foster the identification of key opportunities for scientific growth and medical evidence for the support and/or expansion of current approved therapies, and execution of joint initiatives such as research, publication planning, and continuing medical education.
Support the launch related clinical, scientific and medical activities for therapeutic area initiatives and supporting strategic direction.
Provides scientific scrutiny of therapeutic initiatives (ie, publications, educational
programs and market research) for assigned therapeutic areas and products to ensure
information to health care providers and government stakeholders is accurate, detailed, and balanced. This includes, but is not limited to, serving as medical reviewer for all advertising/promotional deliverables to ensure medical accuracy.
Provides clinical training to medical and newly hired commercial representatives; assumes leadership role in proactive medical communications to sales representatives (eg, Web-ex, teleconferences, clinical presentations) on FAQs and important medical topics.
Develops and manages educational deliverables to support commercialization of marketed products (eg, advisory boards/roundtable meetings with KOLs; disease state backgrounders)
Collaborates with VP, Clinical & Medical Affairs to prepare and manage Medical Affairs budget.
Maintains comprehensive medical/scientific knowledge of assigned therapeutic areas,
disease states and evolving clinical issues related to products, through literature surveillance and attendance at advisory boards and key medical/scientific congresses.
Facilitates clinical presentations in a clear and effective manner to various healthcare professional/scientific audiences
Represents the medical/scientific perspective during respective cross-functional brand planning strategy meetings.
Represents the Medical Affairs department at key medical/scientific congresses
Responds to medical queries with regard to use of products from healthcare professionals and government stakeholders in domestic and international markets.
Undertakes ad hoc medical affairs projects as assigned by the VP, Clinical & Medical Affairs.
Scientific Affairs and Reporting:
Establish clear expectations for insight generation related to therapeutic areas scientific objectives. Specific aspects include, but may not be limited to:
Oversee, support, and continue to optimize the insight generation process which includes: insight identification, KOL mapping, documentation, discussion, and compliant communication across the organizations internal stakeholders.
Ensure appropriate communication of insights within Medicine and account teams.
Provide feedback on the quality of insights to medical affairs.
Challenge internal stakeholders to evaluate current strategies in light of insights and impact on the vaccine business unit.
Identify ‘success stories’ for communication within Medicine and the broader organization to demonstrate value (as appropriate).
Lead medical affairs activities by ensuring appropriate collaboration and communication occurs within internal stakeholders, within Medicine, Clinical, R & D and the broader organization – in a seamless and efficient manner. Specific aspects include, but may not be limited to:
Collaborate to ensure communication is cross-functional throughout medical affairs team, including communication of learnings, best practices, and insights.
Collaborate compliantly with broader organizational leadership to drive decision making based on customer needs.
Foster and oversee collaboration by medical affairs with:
Commercial enterprise wide partners
Additional internal stakeholders, as required.
Collaborate with field medicine operations to optimize processes and ensure appropriate support (i.e. training, resources, job aides etc.).
Support field medical directors in establishing and evolving boundaries for collaborative and compliant communications and interactions by medical affairs teams.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:
PharmD, PhD or MD degree plus significant experience in medical affairs activities, to
include, but not limited to strategic medical affairs planning activities, commercial interface collaboration and medical communications.
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in medical affairs activities .
Robust experience in KOL management activities.
Strong patient and customer focus in daily activities
Fluent in both English and French
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interface with individuals at all level, both within and in the medical/scientific community.
Effectively manages members of Medical Affairs team. Must be proactive and organized, keeping team members well informed and aligned with departmental objectives.
Strong awareness of compliance guidelines regarding advertising/promotional practices and interactions with healthcare professionals and government stakeholders .
Maintains high level of productivity and innovation
Establishes appropriate priorities to achieve timely completion of assignments, while keeping expenditures within budget.
