F/T Youth Care Counsellor - Aries Alternate School Job Opening in Vancouver
UNYA has one (1) full time position available in our Aries Program. Aries is an alternative educational day program for Indigenous youth ages 16-18 years whose educational needs are not being met in mainstream schools/systems.
We offer our youth support in their efforts to stabilize their lives, establish positive support networks, attain essential life-skills and social skills, and obtain educational credits. This is accomplished through their in-class experiences as well as drawing the youth into the larger community through field trips and group outings.
Youth Care Counsellors in the Aries Program are responsible for working in partnership with the Vancouver School Board (VSB) and the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) to ensure a safe, supportive environment that is culturally open and accessible in order to support the personal and educational development of youth participants.
This position is 40 hours per week, usually 8:30 - 4:30 Monday to Friday, but may be adjusted to fit needs of program. This position reports directly to the Manager of the Aries Program.
Qualifications and Conditions:
Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field
2 years of recent related experience
Or, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Knowledge of the following modalities:
Trauma Informed Approach
Harm Reduction Approach
Culture as Therapy
Person Centered and Family Systems Approaches
Demonstrated experience engaging and working effectively with Indigenous youth.
Demonstrated knowledge of the intergenerational impacts of the residential school systems, colonization, the Indigenous Community, and an understanding and willingness to participate in Indigenous protocols, practices, and ceremonies
Demonstrated knowledge of mental health issues, addiction issues, concurrent disorders, and FASD.
First Aid and Foodsafe (or willing to obtain)
Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
Given the needs of youth accessing our services, preference will be given to qualified Indigenous applicants
Duties and Responsibilities:
Establish rapport with youth in the program, as well as others who are connected to the youth. Gather information related to each youth through established interviewing techniques, observing the youth, and soliciting information from family and other professionals involved with the youth. Evaluate information, and with the youth, VSB, MCFD, and other professional supports, develop and implement a care-plan.
Ensure care-plan meets each youth's mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional needs including but not limited to the areas of culture, safety, finance, housing, education, social, support, and recreation.
Implement care-plans and intervention strategies using a variety of techniques, such as the Person Centered Approach, Family Systems Approach, and Trauma Informed Approach. Provide one-on-one informal counselling.
Provide case management services and monitor youth's progress; reassess care-plans on an ongoing basis to ensure youth are fully supported.
Assist youth in realizing their goals as set out in their care-plan by providing skill building and development where identified.
Ensure that all members of a youth's professional team are kept up-to-date on effectiveness of the care-plan, youth's progress, any new issues or trends, and any behaviour changes.
Demonstrate commitment to the team as a positive, active participant who treats others in a respectful and supportive manner, communicates constructively, listens actively, shares openly, cooperates, exhibits flexibility, demonstrates reliability, and helps the team by working together to solve problems.
Organize, facilitate, and supervise youth in group activities/outings, P.E., arts and crafts, tutoring, academics, etc. Positively participate in all Aries programming and activities in order to provide a positive role model experience for youth participants.
Establish and maintain a network of positive working relationships with other UNYA programs and other community programs/resources to ensure effective referrals and enhance access to a strong continuum of supports. Ensure that youth are being referred to appropriate services in the community, as individual needs require. Provide information, advocacy, and support in the referral process for internal and external programs, as well as other supports in the community.
Create a safe space for all youth and staff by responding to behaviours and situations through a trauma-informed lens, modelling respectful behaviour, and through thoughtful and fun interactions with staff and youth.
Maintain appropriate statistical records, logs, case files, and client reports in order to meet both UNYA and its funder's requirements.
Maintain sound financial and office management. Oversee and monitor program expenditures, ensuring that the program remains within its allocated budgets. Prepare and submit financial reports as required.
Positively and proactively address any concerns, incidents, or crises which affect youth participants, program operation and mandate, UNYA policies, and community relations.
Respect and assure youth participants' confidentiality in the community and with other service professionals. Respect and maintain the confidentiality of staff issues within the team, with the exception of UNYA Management.
Adhere to UNYA's Philosophy of Care, and all program-specific and organization-wide policies and procedures.
Keep abreast of current social concerns and street trends, and as required, attend professional development activities in order to remain informed regarding issues affecting street-involved youth.
Work together with Aries Management to foster a positive, engaging workplace environment. Consult with and report to Aries Management on a regular basis for ongoing assessment and refinement of the program.
Maintain the day-to-day operations of the program (meal preparation, cleaning, maintenance, etc.) and provide skill-building opportunities in these areas to youth.
Perform any other duty deemed necessary by UNYA Management to ensure the safe, healthy, and productive operation of the Aries Program.
