Position Summary

Reporting to the VP of Commercial Import – Far East, The Director of Trade – Import’s mandate is to improve the top line performance of our operations in Canada through effective leadership of the local Trade Management team under his/her responsibility. Alignment with the directives provided from the principle Trade Management team in Geneva and Senior Management within Canada is necessary for success. He/she is tasked with the responsibility of leading his/her Trade Management Team through various aspects of the commercial, operational and corporate landscape of the organization.

The Director of TradeImports is to establish a firm understanding of the local import markets including the customer base, vendors, competition and geographic opportunities/challenges. Moreover, he/she is responsible for leading his/her Trade Management team to formulate and successfully execute short, mid and long-term strategies.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead within the business area by identifying key KPI/target goals, developing high-level objectives.
  • Ensure the company’s strategic objectives and plans are being met.
  • Review/Analyze the market pertaining to volumes and revenues of designated trade areas.
  • Build collaborative partnerships and maintain commercial dialogue with new and existing customers, principles in Geneva, MSC origin offices, vendors and partners.
  • Build and/or enhance the skill set of our Import Trade Management team.
  • Represent and speak on behalf of MSC Canada with relevant stakeholders.
  • Execute all projects within established deadlines.
  • Lead Trade to execute set strategies which, at all times must remain aligned with the principle Trade Management, Geneva.
  • Oversee and coach assigned Trade Managers to ensure the successful performance and achievement of objectives across Trade(s).
  • Ensure correct and accurate reporting to Geneva Trade Management.

Qualifications and Competencies

All MSC Canada employees are expected to live the MSC values.

  • Undergraduate Degree. Graduate degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years leadership experience. Preferably in a commercial setting.
  • Minimum 3 years in Ocean Transportation. Preferably in a commercial role.
  • Excellent Negotiator
  • Exceptional diplomacy, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong sense of urgency
  • Analytical and solutions oriented using creative out-of-the-box thinking
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (i.e... Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and technical ease
