Nova Scotia Health Authority provides health services to Nova Scotians and some specialized services to Maritimers and Atlantic Canadians. We operate hospitals, health centres and community-based programs across the province. Our team of health professionals includes employees, doctors, researchers, learners and volunteers that provide the health care or services you may need. This is accomplished across four geographic management zones which are responsible for the operation of acute care health centres and the provision of a variety of inpatient, outpatient services including academic, tertiary, quaternary care and community based programs and services including continuing care, primary health care, public health, and mental health and addictions.


Reporting to the Manager of Child and Adolescent Services, Mental Health and Addictions, the Social Worker works with children and adolescents up to the nineteenth birthday providing assessment and treatment for children and adolescents who have mental health or concurrent disorders. Child and Adolescent Services is a multi-discipline service (which includes psychology, social work, psychiatry, addiction clinical therapists and, behavioural interventionists) that provides service in the hospital clinic, schools, and satellite clinics. Services can include individual, family based, or group therapy. Evening and daytime hours and travel is required. Participating in the delivery of evidence based group therapy is required.

  • Master's Degree in Social Work with a specialization in a clinical mental health and/ or addiction stream from an accredited program specializing in children, adolescents and families
  • Minimum two years' experience providing Mental Health & Addiction services to preschoolers, children and adolescents within a clinical setting.

  • If above not available, a Master's Degree in Social Work from an acceptable educational institution that can demonstrate a significant portion of coursework focused on the areas of children, adolescents and families. Registered or eligible to register with the appropriate regulatory body within the Province of Nova Scotia. Minimum 3 years' experience providing mental health services to children and adolescents within a mental health setting, within the last ten years.

  • Knowledge of the DSM-IV-5 and ability to use to screen for, assess and conceptualize common childhood mental health disorders (ADHD, anxiety, depression, behavior disorders) and the ability to identify and refer on more severe disorders (e.g. psychosis, bipolar disorder)
  • Demonstrated diagnostic experience completing mental health assessments and implementing evidence based treatment plans for children and adolescents
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practice of principles of behavior management, cognitive behavior therapy, family and systems based work, group therapy and other evidence based practices
  • Ability to screen for concurrent Mental Health disorders
  • Knowledge of the impact of substance use on other mental health disorders and vice versa
  • Demonstrated experience in crisis and suicide risk assessment and intervention
  • Demonstrated ability to assess family functioning including impact of marital discord, family violence/neglect, attachment, parental trauma/addictions, grief, social determinants of health, and social supports
  • Demonstrated ability to implement family based interventions for complex cases with complicated family dynamics (e.g., high levels of conflict, parent mental health issues, child welfare, substance-abuse, attachment issues, etc.).
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
  • Successful external applicants are required to provide a criminal record check (including Vulnerable Sector Search) to People Services before starting employment and assume any associated costs as a condition of employment

  • Exemplary ability to coordinate the development of effective linkages with other health, justice, education, social service and community agencies as needed.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in working collaboratively and cooperatively with other professionals
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills

If above not available a training option will be considered for qualified candidates. Candidates that will embark in the training position will be determined by an interview process. The candidate must have: Master's degree in Social Work with a Specialization with Children & Families

  • Two years' experience, within the last ten (10) years, working with preschoolers, children and adolescents who have high risk behaviors or live in high risk environments. Consideration will be given for work, practicum and volunteer experiences
  • A willingness to complete five distance Child & Adolescent Mental Health Core Courses and an extensive two year orientation in Mental Health & Addictions which includes supervised practice with the purpose of developing competencies for the position. It is expected the candidate will complete a competency evaluation and set goals and a plan with their supervisor based on those gaps, which is expected to take two years

Hours of Work

Permanent Full-time (100%) Position; 75.00 Hours Bi-weekly.

Travel to other sites may be required.

Salary Information

Social Worker III

$34.8132$45.7654 hourly
