Registered Nurse Job Openings in Ottawa

The duties of nurses in the Public Service of Canada encompass the care of patients and the provision of assistance to medical doctors in the treatment of illness, the conduct of programs designed to promote health, and the provision of advice. The nurse's responsibilities may be of a consultative, administrative, research or practical nature dependent upon the demands of individual positions.

Definitions of the experience necessary to qualify as junior, intermediate, or senior resource in this category are not specified here, but may be determined by the Identified User as an additional mandatory criteria within their specific requirement.

Minimum mandatory criteria:

Education: Post-secondary College diploma or a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a recognized university or Master Degree.

Resources must hold and maintain during any given contract period the appropriate registration or license to practice as a Nurse (Registered/Health/Community/Practitioner) from the regulatory organization in the respective province/territory. The province/territory where the work will be conducted will be determined in resulting Request for Proposals (RFP). Please refer to the appropriate provincial nursing Colleges / Ordre for the specific Standards Guidelines and Scope of Practices that apply to the province of work.

Typical duties may include:

  • Assessing the patients physical, emotional and mental health
  • Performing basic exams and take vital signs, blood pressure, draw blood samples
  • Diagnosing injuries, illnesses, and disorders
  • Carrying out treatment plans for patients which include giving medications, coordinating treatments, bandaging wounds and giving injections
  • Assisting with medical procedures or minor surgery
  • Educating patients and informing them of different treatment options
  • Immunizing against disease, screening for diseases
  • Treating for short-term acute illnesses (e.g., infections, minor injuries)
  • Promoting health (e.g., infection control)
  • Instructing individuals, families and other groups on topics such as health education, disease prevention, and developing health improvement programs
  • Preparing rooms, and ensuring that stock of supplies is maintained
  • Conducting specified laboratory tests
  • Prescribing or recommending drugs, medical devices or other forms of treatment, such as physical therapy, inhalation therapy, or related therapeutic procedures
  • Directing and coordinating infection control programs, advising and consulting with specified personnel about necessary precautions
  • Performing administrative functions
  • Maintaining accurate, detailed reports and records
  • Monitoring, recording and reporting symptoms and changes in patients' conditions
  • Recording patients' medical information and vital signs
  • Modifying patient treatment plans as indicated by patients' responses and conditions
  • Consulting and coordinating with health care team members to, implement and evaluate patient care plans
  • Ordering, interpreting, and evaluating diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient’s condition
