Current growth rates mean that young people at age 20 face a 1 in 2 lifetime risk of developing the condition. To stem the tide of this epidemic, is raising its sights to deliver impact at a population level by advocating for healthy public policy, supporting healthcare providers to deliver exceptional diabetes care, funding research towards a cure, and enhancing our digital delivery channels to support the needs of those we serve.
About the Director, Provincial Government Relations Role
Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Mission, the Director, Provincial Government Relations is responsible for developing and leading ’s provincial government relationships. The Director will develop and implement the strategic advocacy in the provinces to improve services, care and access (except Québec). This role will also be responsible for coordinating our advocacy efforts and partnerships within the provinces. The Director will assess trends and issues within each provincial government and other key provincial decision-making bodies and determine appropriate actions with key stakeholders and volunteers.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and plan a strategy for advocacy to improve services for people living with diabetes in the provinces.
  • Monitor and report on activity taken by provincial governments to identify issues or trends affecting people living with diabetes in the provinces.
  • Oversee response and proactively influence provincial healthcare related bills, legislation, regulations and policy.
  • Develop and foster relationships with relevant and/or diabetes-related partners, decision-makers, stakeholders, volunteers and coalition groups in each province. Identify opportunities for to partner with them to advocate on issues affecting people living with diabetes in the provinces.
  • Lead the process for all Provincial government policy submissions, recommendations and responses.
  • Provide ongoing guidance and support for the all provincial advocacy activity across Canada.
  • Build the knowledge of staff and volunteers of its strategic advocacy plan.
  • Serve as liaison between Regional Teams and the Public Affairs and Advocacy Team.
  • Support the Senior Vice President, Mission and the Public Affairs and Advocacy Team on other projects and initiatives, as required.

  • Ability to provide the political insight, discretion and sound judgment required to make decisions that will likely impact the credibility of and its stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated partnership and relationship management skills (internal and external) and networking abilities, including the ability to affect change without direct authority.
  • An effective advocate allowing to influence provincial policy decision direction.
  • Highly motivated, resourceful and driven to succeed while providing creative solutions to challenges.
  • A strong team player with excellent communications skills and the ability to both lead and work within a team setting to accomplish shared goals.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to seize new opportunities and reprioritize to balance urgent and important deliverables.
  • Committed to demonstrating ’s core values.
About You
The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:
  • A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in a related field
  • University degree in political science, public administration or related field, with a Master’s degree preferred
  • Proven experience in leading successful advocacy campaigns
  • Working knowledge of the Canadian non-profit sector
  • Knowledge of the Canadian health care system, and of provincial politics
  • Previous management experience, including managing volunteers
  • Executive level communication skills
  • Proficiency in both official languages is an asset
  • Willing to travel regularly across Canada for meetings and events (when/as) appropriate
