Position Title: Secondary Youth Worker, Alternative Suspension
Location: Abbotsford Recreation Centre (2499 McMillan Road, Abbotsford, BC)
Term: Permanent, Part-Time
Shift: Shifts occur Monday – Friday, between 7:30 am – 2:30 pm
Hours: 15-20 hours per week
Salary: $14.76 per hour
Start Date: As soon as possible
Reports to: Manager, Youth Programs

Nature & Scope:
The Secondary Youth Worker is an important member of the local team supporting this program in their respective Alternative Suspension service site. Reporting to the Program Manager as well as the primary youth worker, the secondary youth worker will provide homework support, workshops, recreational support and activities during break times and help create a safe space for teens struggling with school or emotional distress.
Responsibilities:

  • Ensures that the program operates smoothly at the service site and ensures that the service provided to schools is of
excellent quality.
  • Supports youth referred to the Alternative Suspension program and monitors outcomes.
  • Ensures that all development and program service targets are met by implementing the programs work plan.
  • Collaborates closely with the Primary Youth Worker to ensure consistency in program delivery.
  • Delivers flexible programming based on the participating students needs in the framework of a comprehensive,
preventative approach.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Required Qualifications/ Experience:
  • A Diploma in Social Services, Child and Youth Care, Counselling and/or a combination of related education and
experience.
  • Well developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication
with youth participants, staff and volunteers; excellent written communication skills.
  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and
invisible dimensions of diversity.
  • Able to manage and facilitate small groups of youth
  • Strong communication skills and experience working with a variety of cultures and family dynamics
  • Knowledge of physical activity guidelines for youth
  • Experience keeping records and working with computers
  • Ability to tutor high school subjects
  • Must be able for shifts between 7:30am – 2:30 pm MondayFriday
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector
Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date.
  • Current Emergency First Aid/CPR-C certificate required
  • Experience working with youth (middle school) in a school setting and/or preventative approach.
