Field Technician (Inspection & Testing) Job Openings in Toronto

Job Description

We are looking for junior to senior levels of technicians and technologists for field compaction testing using a nuclear gauge, concrete sampling and testing, footing inspection, and material lab testing on construction sites for urban land development, municipal infrastructure, and building construction.

The ideal candidate will have experience in the construction materials (aggregates, asphalt and concrete) industry; should have excellent communication and computer skills, and must be able to work independently, as well as part of a team.


Field / lab Technicians will be responsible for supporting all aspects of quality control under the supervision of project managers, supervisors or scheduling coordinators.

  • Conducting on-site testing of soil compaction, asphalt compaction, and concrete properties;
  • Review documents and specifications.
  • Preparation of field reports documenting equipment used, test locations, and results.
  • Report any non-conformance concerns while on site to management.
  • Execute tests in the field or laboratory on construction materials to assess their quality.
  • Prepare and collect Aggregates and asphalt samples for laboratory testing.
  • Perform compaction testing by Nuclear Gauge.
  • Concrete testing and casting samples for lab testing.
  • Asphalt coring for thickness and material composition investigations
  • Ensure accuracy of test data.
  • Perform visual inspections.
  • Participate at site meetings.
  • Liaison with clients and contractors.
  • Assist with laboratory testing as needed.
  • Maintain equipment and laboratory in good condition.
  • Maintain calibration of equipment.
  • Maintain testing equipment.

Required Skills

o Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories (CCIL)/American Concrete Institution (ACI) certification or the ability to obtain certification.

o Knowledge of Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) testing methods

o Experience with the care and use of nuclear gauges

o Knowledge of compaction principles and testing

o Knowledge of aggregate classification and testing procedures

o Proficient at report writing, reviewing, and interpretation of results

o Competency with MS Excel, MS Word, e-mail, and common smart phone applications

o Hold a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record

o Ability to travel and work remotely as needed

Offers of employment for safety-sensitive positions involving fieldwork are contingent upon candidates being able to perform key physical tasks of the job as described in the job posting and interview. This may include the ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions, such as remote or isolated areas, working alone, and in inclement weather (within safe and reasonable limits). Training will be provided in on-site safety, testing procedures, and use of equipment. There will be some opportunities to work overtime, if desired.
