Director, Information Technology

Status: Regular, Full-Time, Excluded
Number of Positions: 1
Reports to: Vice President, Business Transformation & Technology


The Opportunity

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Design, build and maintain a capable team and leadership structure that meets the changing organizational needs of IT.
  • Establishes and implements metrics and key performance indicators for the IT department. Monitors progress, making any necessary corrective adjustments to ensure the department’s planned outcomes and results are achieved.
  • Takes a holistic view to meeting the organizational needs of IT and fulfills these needs through internal development coupled with leveraging the capabilities of key vendors through strong relationship and requirement management.
  • Participates as a member of the VP’s leadership team, and leads development of the overarching IT strategy and business plan, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Provides advice and expertise to the VP, Executive Team, Board of Directors, and business leaders on the strategic implications of IT developments and changes on the business. This includes facilitating meaningful discussion of the topic with all business leaders, communicating in a language that everyone understands.
  • Fosters a culture of innovation and supports innovation efforts across the organization.
  • Provides strategic leadership to development of operational plans and initiatives for all areas of accountability; and also develops and monitors the IT budget.
  • Oversees development, implementation, and compliance with IT standards, practices, policies, and processes, ensuring the necessary controls are in place to identify and mitigate risks. Oversees the implementation of data standards, practices, policies, and processes necessary within IT to support the easy and safe data acquisition, access and use.
  • Provides broad direction to the design, development, maintenance and support of ’s systems and platforms, ensuring delivery of integrated, reliable and flexible products to address broad business requirements.
  • Provides broad direction to the delivery of IT services, including research, innovation, resolution of major technical problems; database administration, development operations/application support, security, user experience, vendor management, business resumption/continuity, network support; technical support for desktops, mobile devices and accessories
  • Manages directly reporting managers and leaders, involving recruitment and selection; coaching and development; performance management; and all related people practices in accordance with policies and the collective agreement(s). Also oversees the management of indirectly reporting staff across the department.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

Education and Experience

The required knowledge and skills for the position would typically be acquired through a degree in computer science or management information systems and 10+ years of experience in IT, involving development of enterprise-wide systems, and senior leadership.

Building and maintaining strong internal and external relationships.

Ability to listen and understand organizational and business needs, validating proposed solutions, and inspiring teams in their delivery on objectives.

Ability to manage diverse teams both in composition, reporting relationships and physical locations

Mastery of the concepts, theories, practices and techniques of the IT field in the context of complex, enterprise systems and platforms

Advanced business acumen to provide broad direction to the development, implementation and maintenance of IT infrastructure, systems and platforms within the strategic business context

Advanced communication and interpersonal skills to provide expertise and critical liaison with business stakeholders, other IT leaders, and external vendors/service providers

Advanced strategic planning skills to develop and drive out IT’s overarching strategies and business plans

Advanced analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills to identify, assess and take action to address challenges, develop solutions, and keep the department’s planned objectives on track

Exposure to multiple software development methodologies and project management methodologies including Agile.

Experience on on-premise to cloud migrations is a plus
