New employees must provide documentation of a 2-step TB screening, as well as proof of immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox) prior to their start date at St. Mary’s General Hospital. Staff will require clearance from Employee Health and Wellness before they are able to begin any position within SMGH.
The Attendant provides direct and indirect support for various patient care activities. Attendants are accountable and responsible for assisting and supporting other members of the health care team in the provision of a safe and clean environment, upholding infection control standards.
What You'll Do
Assist in transporting, lifting, and positioning of patients. Other patient care activities include, but are not limited to, assisting/supervision during ambulation.
Check with nursing unit staff for direction on whether patient’s condition allows for safe transport i.e. accompaniment required.
Effective communicates patient related information to the most appropriate person in a timely manner while maintaining confidentiality.
Practice infection control and environmental standards/precautions to promote a safe and clean work environment. Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate cleaning products as well as use of and care for cleaning equipment e.g. wheelchairs between each patient use.
Responsible for ensuring oxygen tanks are replenished on the nursing units.
Responsible for delivery of specimens to the lab in a timely manner.
Demonstrate initiative to understand the activities for the day in order to organize and prioritize work.
Follows established procedures for optimum workflow e.g. ER key system
Participate at unit huddles and maintains an awareness of changes to process via email.
Responsible for completion of annual workplace safety reviews (e.g., WHMIS, FIT testing, CPR etc.)
Grade 12 or equivalent;
Graduate of a health-related course at a community college is preferred
Must have current CPR
Must be able to communicate effectively, verbally and in written form
Excellent interpersonal skills required
Must have a level of physical fitness suitable to perform the tasks required for this position;
Must have a positive work record and good attendance
Keyboard skills an asset
