Duties

The WP05 National Consultant roles within Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) are responsible for the provision of consultative services, professional guidance, functional direction and training to Veterans Affairs Canada client service delivery staff in support of the delivery of programs, benefits and services to promote the well-being of VAC clients in one or more of the following areas of expertise: case management, program management and operational support, quality management, mental health, disability management, transition and rehabilitation.

Intent of the process

  • Significant experience* working in health or social services, or welfare programs or services.
  • Experience in providing functional direction**or advice or guidance relating to programs or benefits and services to clients, (internal or external) in an interdisciplinary*** health-care, social services environment.
  • Experience leading or supporting projects or teams.
  • Experience providing advice or guidance or recommendations to management.
  • Experience in facilitating group activities/events or delivering training sessions in an adult learning environment.
  • Experience in interpreting or applying legislation or regulatory or policy-related benefits and services.
  • "Significant experience" refers to the breadth and depth of experience and is defined as a combination of time spent doing the activity, as well as type (range, scope, and complexity) of work handled related to the experience criteria. Such experience is normally acquired when having performed the duties over a period of 2 years within the last 5 years.

** "Functional direction" is guidance and expertise on programs, practices, policies and processes or practices to support decision making by operational staff.
*** Inter-disciplinary environment is defined as a group of diverse professional roles who work closely together and support one another through the exchange of their respective professional expertise. It draws knowledge from several fields such as various medical professions; physicians, psychology, social work, sociology, etc. It is about creating solutions by thinking across boundaries.

Bachelor’s degree from a recognized post secondary institution with a specialization in social work, nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, vocational rehabilitation, psychology, counselling, or another specialty related to human behaviour and appropriate experience, or an acceptable combination of education at bachelor level combined with training and experience.

** Coaching / mentoring is a skill which helps clients develop rapidly, produce better results, and improve their ability to set and achieve goals and take action. This is developed through a combination of professional training in Coaching and / or motivational interviewing and experience working in a coaching /mentoring role.
*** Inter-disciplinary environment is defined as a group of diverse professional roles who work closely together and support one another through the exchange of their respective professional expertise. It draws knowledge from several fields such as various medical professions; physicians, psychology, social work, sociology, etc. It is about creating solutions by thinking across boundaries.
**** Case Management is a collaborative process designed to meet the individual’s and family’s holistic needs in order to facilitate timely access to appropriate resources so their level of independence and quality of life are optimized. The functions conducted by Case Managers include engagement and relationship building, comprehensive/holistic assessment, analysis, case planning/consultation, monitoring /evaluation and disengagement.
