Under the general direction of the Chief Administrative Officer, the Director of Finance and Facilities provides leadership and direction for the Faculty’s financial planning and budgeting, accounting, reporting and analysis, fund management, and facilities.
Major duties include financial planning and forecasting, overseeing budget development and analysis, accounting, payroll, reporting, reconciliations and internal audit implementation; forecasting the Faculty’s expenditures; managing departmental trust funds (endowments and expendable) and research accounts; providing input and expertise on issues relating to the operation, budgetary and financial management of the Faculty; recommending and developing the Faculty’s financial and administrative policies and business processes and systems; and ensuring and overseeing the accuracy, security and integrity of information relating to the Faculty on administrative management systems.
Furthermore, the Faculty is extensively funded externally by various Foundations, Government Agencies, and donors for various academic and clinical programs within the Faculty. The incumbent is responsible for the overall financial management of these funds and includes ensuring the appropriate funding reports are prepared, and that they are accurate in order for the stakeholders to be able to report to the funding and/or granting agency.
The incumbent decides which stakeholders need to be involved, assess the implications and issues, receives buy-in from all levels, and implements and communicates changes as required. The incumbent is responsible for monitoring and providing updates to the CAO and the Dean on the expenditures and balance of all Advancement funds and recommends alignment with these funds to support Faculty priorities.
The incumbent in this position is also accountable for and oversees the team responsible for operation and maintenance of all the Law School buildings and the team that develops and carries out faculty events. Ensures that facilities are fully functional at all times to support the research and teaching missions of the Law School and needs of the greater community.
They participate in the strategic management, including making recommendations to the CAO involving short-term planning for facility-type projects and for longer-range programs/projects.
University degree and completed CGA, CMA or CA designation, or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience; formal training in financial management and accounting practices; and up-to-date knowledge of non-profit financial management.
The incumbent must have at least 7 years of progressive financial management experience of which 3 years must be in a senior financial role. Must have experience in budgeting, financial planning and accounting. Must have strong knowledge of finance policies, practices and systems, including fund accounting, financial controls, external financing, cash flow operations, long-range fee planning, business operations, human resource planning and strategic planning methods and techniques. Experience with the University’s budget model, policies, procedures, guidelines, systems and structure is highly desirable
General knowledge of design and construction principles and practices as applied to building renovation; knowledge of building maintenance, knowledge of preventative maintenance program; experience working with design professional and contractors; and strong knowledge of event planning and space management.
Advanced systems skills in financial databases and reporting; experience in FIS and HRIS; and experience building financial models and reports on various software platforms.
Must have strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to develop and/or cull complex business, financial operational or strategic analysis into easily understandable information; strong decision-making/problem solving skills and well developed judgmental skills; requires exceptional political sensitivity and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across and outside the organization at all levels; strong leadership skills, management experience in a unionized environment; and the ability to work with teams and develop consensus in both sensitive and confidential situations. Ability to inspire, organize and direct the activities of team members and develop expertise; client services oriented, good listening, critical thinking and analytical skills; ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities; excellent interpersonal skills; and be able to work effectively with faculty, staff and students.
