Position Summary

As a member of the Communication Infrastructure Group and reporting to the Manager, Research Server Support, the incumbent acts as an IT technical resource in the support of the teaching needs and some research support of the Department of Computer Science. Service requests will come from departmental faculty members, lab instructors, graduate students and staff. The primary responsibility of the position is to act as the Linux systems manager for all aspects of the department's server computing facilities. The successful candidate will be required to become the subject-matter expert for the software and hardware systems to which he/she has been delegated operational authority.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated, significant experience and superior knowledge in the installation, configuration, management/administration and maintenance of:
  • Large scale Linux server-based systems environments including database and web services.
  • Virtualization environments.
  • Server class hardware systems.
  • Packaged and Open-Source software products.
  • Network-based storage systems.
  • Student laboratory Linux desktop systems.
  • Departmental network inter-connectivity inside a larger campus environment.

As well, the incumbent will be required to perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science plus a minimum of 5 years of directly-related work experience in performing the above duties. Equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • Proven experience in successfully supporting all technical aspects of a large-scale Linux server environment is key.
  • Experience with IT automation, and exposure to authentication protocols, would be an asset.
  • An established, proactive commitment to on-going technical learning and development.

The incumbent must have the demonstrated ability to:
  • Work collaboratively and cooperatively to provide exemplary service;
  • Be able to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, including the supply of meaningful and self-explanatory documentation, wikis, and man/info pages;
  • Analyze the needs and requests of members of the department to define, propose, negotiate and deliver successful IT solutions;
  • Reach set and agreed-to goals working independently with minimal supervision;
  • Analyze, decipher, understand and implement solutions to technical problems where there may be little local expertise.

Experience in a higher-education setting would be an asset.
