Your opportunity:
The Citizen Lab is an interdisciplinary laboratory based at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, , focusing on research, development, and high-level strategic policy and legal engagement at the intersection of information and communication technologies, human rights, and global security.
Reporting to the Citizen Lab Director and working closely with the Citizen Lab Associate Director (Research), the Research Officer researches topics related to privacy legislation.
This work includes: conducting primary research; collecting and analyzing data for interviews and research projects; generating written reports; assisting with the editing and production of reports, papers and other deliverables; coordinating meeting schedules, agendas, materials, action and follow-up items; responding to enquires within the defined scope of the role and redirects as appropriate; performing other related research assistance tasks as assigned; proofing and posting adverts to recruit interviewees; preparing consent forms using templates; recording and tabulating interview results; and maintaining a research database.
Your responsibilities will include:

  • Probing for information from potential participants to determine if they meet study criteria
  • Resolving issues in the course of test administration and escalating problems as required
  • Scheduling study participants
  • Coding quantitative research data
  • Generating reports
Qualifications: Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor Degree in Political Science, Communications, area studies, or information studies, or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum one year research assistance experience in a university research environment or other related institution
  • experience providing support for research on privacy legislation, with relevant experience required for federal, provincial, municipal privacy legislation in Canada as well as international policy legislation.
  • Experience conducting primary research, collecting and analyzing data, and producing written reports.
  • Strong research skills with solid understanding of quantitative and qualitative social science research methodologies.
  • Advanced skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and database management software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines with sensitivity to organizational priorities.
  • Strong familiarity with social media and information controls
  • Ability to take initiative, solve problems and make day-to-day decisions
  • Demonstrated ability to work well as a team member and independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a high-pressure environment and prioritize tasks.
