Petawawa, Ontario (located in Eastern Ontario, 170 kilometers northwest of Ottawa)

Term: Temporary Full-time (Four month term)

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Salary: $24.72/hr

Benefits: 6% vacation added to each pay

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Employment Services Coordinator, this position is responsible for the development and delivery of employment and career counselling services and support to residents of Petawawa to Deux Rivières through the partnership agreement with the Ontario Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities. The Employment Coach will work out of the Petawawa and Deep River offices, on a regular rotational basis.


(a) Post-secondary education in a Social Services, Human Resources or Employment Counselling field.

(b) Knowledge of current labour market and trends.

(c) Experience in group facilitation and training.

(d) Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) with preference given to those bilingual in both official languages (English and French).

(e) Understanding of Ontario labour market supply and demand, trends and economic outlook.

(f) Thorough understanding of Canadian Armed Forces communities, systems and policies to effectively assist families in accessing appropriate services and supports.

Language Requirement: English Mandatory; French an asset.

Core Competencies:

(a) Knowledge of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development, civilian, provincial agencies and other organizations that can provide employment related support services.

(b) A good understanding of the military lifestyle and its impact on employability.

(c) Experience working with confidential and sensitive information and referral processes an asset.

(d) Ability to prepare written reports, correspondence and maintain accurate records.

(e) High degree of personal initiative and ability to work flexible hours (Flexibility will be required to meet the needs of the families we serve).

(f) Demonstrated abilities in customer service skills.

(g) Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word and Excel; ability to work with provincial data systems and navigate the Internet is required.

(h) Sensitivity and tact in dealing with people and able to effectively collaborate with local businesses and community partners.

(i) Exhibit characteristics of warmth, empathy, humour, and a non-judgmental philosophy of care and strong understanding and application of ethical principles.


(a) Provide short term supportive employment coaching, empowering clients to overcome barriers to employment, make referrals to appropriate community resources as needed.

(b) Assist clients in career decisions and career planning.

(c) Facilitate the development of client resumes and cover letters while empowering clients to gain the skills and confidence for independence in these areas.

(d) Coaching clients in job search strategies.

(e) Assess clients’ needs, barriers, and cultural awareness.

(f) Support clients in the implementation of the action pans including systematic approach to overcoming barriers, obtaining necessary credentials and skills.

(g) Attend the appropriate community events to create an awareness of the programming available through the Employment Services department.

Special Requirements

(a) Adhere to all PMFRC policies and procedures including policies regarding privacy code and confidentiality.

(b) Participate/ assist with all special events when required.

(c) Occasional extended workday and/or occasional evening or weekend as required.

(d) Ability to provide a clear criminal record check, obtain an enhanced reliability security clearance, and vulnerable sector screening (current within 6 months).

(e) Valid Driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle for work related travel and requisite driver’s insurance.

(f) Travel within the County of Renfrew.
