We require experienced Casual Indigenous Support Workers to work in the district’s Indigenous Education Department. Qualified candidates will be considered for placement on the established casual list to work on an as-needed basis.


Under the general direction of the Administrative Officer or District Principal of Indigenous Education or designate, the Indigenous Support Worker – Indigenous provides enhancement within the goal areas of the Indigenous Enhancement Agreement (i.e.: school completion, reading, cultural pride, and sense of belonging) to Indigenous students in the elementary, middle, or secondary school settings. Incumbents are assigned specifically to Indigenous students in a fully or partially integrated setting and work in a professional and courteous manner.

The job involves maintaining confidentiality in all matters of the school district and current, proficient knowledge of the documentation practices, detailed procedures, School District Policies and Ministry of Education Legislation.


  • Providing cultural support to Indigenous students by:acting as a strong Indigenous role model to Indigenous students; promoting extracurricular activities which will enhance the students’ academic or social achievements; learning about students’ various cultural backgrounds to appropriately nurture relationships; assisting eligible students obtaining Indian, Metis, or Inuit status; organizing cultural events; and providing family support via visits and phone calls to the home
  • Enhancing academic curriculum by:delivering presentations to students and school staff; advising of cultural activities, materials, programs, and resources available for personal or classroom use; organizing field trips and tours which will enhance the understanding of Indigenous culture; liaising with Elders and education designates of the Indigenous communities, Administrator or designate, and District Indigenous Helping Teacher
  • Providing academic support to Indigenous students by:working with a small group of students periodically pulled out of the regular program, and/or work with students in one or more regular classrooms to reinforce concepts previously taught by the teacher; reviewing and explaining instructions and homework assignments; tutoring students in a variety of subjects; providing feedback to students on assignments and tests; and advising the classroom teacher on issues related to student progress
  • Providing academic support to Indigenous students with special needs by:working with Education Assistants to implement the individual education plans (IEPs) and track achievements; following behaviour modification programs and reporting on student progress, discussing program modifications with the teacher; implementing and monitoring behaviour management programs including observation, record-keeping, and follow-up; and referring any new and/or unusual matters to a supervisor
  • Performing administrative tasks such as:generating letters and proposals for field trips; preparing teaching materials; marking tests and assignments; printing and photocopying documentation; monitoring attendance and tracking grades; and ensuring the safe and orderly storage of equipment and supplies
  • Participating in staff meetings as requested and performing all such other duties as may be assigned by the Principal, District Principal of Indigenous Education, or designate


This position requires a relatively equal balance of standing/walking and sitting to accommodate the needs of Indigenous students in all learning environments. Incumbents may be required to briskly walk on occasion and retrieve materials from storage which may require climbing ladders, lifting, and reaching.


Successful candidates will have a minimum Grade 12 supplemented by post-secondary training up to six (6) months in duration. One year of related work experience with Indigenous people in an educational setting. Preference will be given to those individuals who have completed a program with a focus on Indigenous culture. Incumbents must also have the following:

  • Working knowledge of the district child abuse protocol and reporting procedures
  • Considerable working knowledge of the Indigenous cultures and heritages and value systems (preferably the Sto:Lo Nation)
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with all internal and external contacts, working collaboratively in a team environment at all times
  • Ability to determine, judge and select appropriate course of action within the limits of established methods and procedures
  • Ability to effectively interact and establish positive rapport with students
  • Ability to communicate effectively using tact, discretion and diplomacy, while maintaining confidentiality in all matters related to the school district
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable
  • Ability to use computer applications (e.g.:MS Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet browsers (e.g.:Explorer), Internet search engines (e.g.:Google), and graphics editors (e.g.:Adobe Photoshop) at a basic level
  • Ability to use office equipment (e.g.:printer, photocopier) at a basic level
  • Experience working with special needs is an asset
  • Level 1 First Aid certification is an asset
  • Demonstrated willingness to participate in professional development opportunities as provided by the district
  • Sufficient physical capabilities, stamina and coordination to perform the duties of the position to the required standard

The salary rate is $23.97 per hour with an additional 8% of straight time in lieu of statutory and non-statutory benefits.
