    We currently have an opening for a Highway Designer in our Niagara-on-the-Lake office . The successful candidate will have 5+ years of Ontario experience in the transportation design engineering field.
    Position Description:
    Working with a dynamic team in a collaborative work environment, the Highway Designer will be based primarily out of Niagara-on-the-Lake but will be expected to collaborate with our offices in Markham and Kitchener. Reporting to the MTO Group Manager, the successful candidate will join a leading-edge practice and team of passionate professionals, to plan and design transportation solutions for the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO), and other local (Regional and Municipal) governments in the Greater Toronto Area. The range of projects the successful candidate will participate in shall include:
  • Environmental assessment studies for provincial and municipal transportation projects,
  • Preliminary design and detailed design.

  • Responsibilities include the following:
  • Prepare technical analysis and design; including cost estimating, quantity calculations, and etc.
  • Draft and review detailed design drawings and presentation materials of highways, urban roads, interchanges and intersections, as part of the team;
  • Prepare and run contract specifications and documentation;
  • Collaborate with all disciplines team members, sub-consultants, clients, and agencies.

  • Health & Safety Responsibilities:
  • Ensure adherence to established policies and procedures within a COR registered environment.
  • Follow all safety and non-safety rules and regulations.
  • Review and adhere to AE's health and safety, environmental, and quality standards, operating procedures and policies.
  • Understand and uphold the policies that prohibit workplace violence and harassment.
  • Participate in regular formal or informal workplace inspections.
  • Enforce safety rules and correct unsafe acts or conditions.
  • Report all accident and / or incident procedures and unsafe conditions and / or behavior.
  • Respond or delegate responsibility immediately to items brought to his / her attention with respect to hazards, defects or non-compliance issues.
  • In addition to the above, the duties include those specified under the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
  • Job Requirements
  • Post-secondary education with an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university or a Civil Engineering Technologist program from an accredited college;
  • 5+ years' experience in the transportation design engineering field;
  • Professional licensing with PEO or an OACETT membership would be an asset;
  • Experience with all aspects of highway / freeway design (e.g. alignments, geometrics, staging, utilities, roadside safety, quantity calculation, contract documents, constructability);
  • Practical knowledge of the MTO, TAC design procedures and standards (preferred);
  • Ability to work with various software packages (i.e. Microstation / InRoads, OpenRoads, AutoCAD / Civil 3D, Microsoft Office);
  • Demonstrated experience with technical writing, minute preparation, etc.;
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects with the ability to effectively prioritize;
  • Demonstrated ability to estimate design level of effort, meet milestone schedule deliverables etc.;
  • Working knowledge and general understanding of traffic engineering principles;
  • Working knowledge and general understanding of other road design requirements (e.g. drainage / hydraulic design, environmental design / mitigation measure, engineering surveys, geotechnical investigations and design);
  • Working knowledge and general understanding of QA / QC industry standards and procedures as well as Environmental Health and Safety practices / requirements;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based environment and provide guidance / mentoring to junior design staff;
  • Experience in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Project)
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently; and
  • Valid Ontario driver's license.
