GIS Technician Job Opening in Vaughan,

POSITION OVERVIEW:

There are two positions available: 1 Full-Time Position and 1 Short-Term Contract Position (4 Months)

Reporting to the Manager, Information Technology Management (ITM), the GIS Technician is responsible for fulfilling various technical requirements of ITM projects, applications, services and training, and develops and promotes the use of spatial data throughout the organization.

This position contributes to GIS projects and works in collaboration with other business units and external partners to implement functional business requirements for data collection, data management, dissemination, modeling, analysis, and reporting on a project basis. In addition to this, the GIS Technician provides technical guidance and recommendations to the Manager, ITM for the purposes of business planning, budget development and ITM program implementation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of data models, metadata, database creation, management, backup, data acquisition protocols, dissemination, and documenting methodologies.
  • Ensure accuracy and reliability of spatial data and resulting analyses which ensures high confidence for corporate level decision making supporting TRCA’s legislative requirements.
  • Ensure quality assurance (QA) of input data and output analytical results.
  • Coordinate daily tasks for multiple active projects with both short and long-term timelines.
  • Research and develop innovative spatial modeling, analysis techniques, and communication tools.
  • Contribute to web, software and GIS mobile application development.
  • Perform a variety of spatial analyses including vector, raster, 3D and cross discipline tabular analysis and reporting.
  • Provide solution-oriented guidance to TRCA staff business units.
  • Provide technical expertise to TRCA by conducting research on industry trends, investigating new technology solutions, evaluating products and services to improve corporate divisional and business unit efficiency.
  • Produce high quality cartographic products, infographics, and charting.
  • Promote the consumption of GIS products through a variety of media formats and tools.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • College diploma in GIS/Geomatics or related discipline.
  • Four Year University degree in Geography, Environmental Science, or related discipline, preferred.
  • Two years of experience related to responsibilities.
  • Valid Ontario G driver’s license in good standing.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS 10.x and ESRI suite of GIS software, relational databases, graphics and presentation applications, MS Office suite, Windows Operating Systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, complete and implement projects under tight timelines.
  • Knowledge of data collection protocols, quality assurance and quality control methodologies.
  • Understanding of error propagation and mitigation, accuracy standards and sound metadata management.
  • Ability to develop and maintain communication between various TRCA business units, other Conservation Authorities and agencies for the purpose of promoting GIS technology, exchanging technical expertise and furthering knowledge.
  • Excellent project management and time management skills.
  • Oral and written communications skills and analytical acumen.
  • Specialized knowledge in the following is considered an asset: Microstation, AutoCAD, Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) including GeoDatabases, Global Positioning Systems, Remote Sensing and Photogrammetery, Digital Orthophotography, 3D Terrain Modelling.
