About Us

University Machine Services (UMS) is an ancillary service located in the Thompson Engineering Building at . UMS provides assistance in instruction, research, and industry through the design and manufacture of specialized components and equipment. Staffed by dedicated trades and technical employees, UMS is equipped with a wide range of conventional machine tools and is capable of producing a wide variety of products and equipment.


The Machinist works with senior technical staff and project managers at University Machine Services to assist with the design, manufacture, maintenance and repair of mechanical and laboratory equipment, which supports researchers in their experimental and teaching activities and facilitates the achievement of their objectives. The incumbent will assist with developing models for testing within research facilities with a focus on machining and the use of Computer Aided Design (CAD), and Solid Works. The Machinist will safely and effectively use equipment to ensure that compliance with safety standards is maintained and will clean, maintain and troubleshoot minor issues with equipment and other tools and will alert supervisor of equipment requiring repairs.

  • 2 year Community College Diploma in a technical program
  • Completion of a registered apprenticeship as a General Machinist or Tool & Die Maker
  • Completion of 8000 hours (approximately 4 years) of on the job training as an apprentice General Machinist or Tool & Die Maker
  • Experience using AutoCAD and SOLIDWORKS
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and SOLIDWORKS
  • Knowledge of machine shop environments with the ability to use manual machining equipment, computer numerical controlled (CNC) machining centres and lathes, and familiarity with blueprints and technical drawings
  • Familiarity with safe work practices, use of protective equipment, safe operation of machines, hygiene and lifting procedures in a shop environment
  • Communication skills to listen to the complete message, solicit more information as required, and provide feedback, and to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users
  • Customer service skills to understand customer needs and expectations, with a desire to deliver helpful and reliable service to the University community
  • Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information on documents, systems, diagrams and other information with high levels of accuracy
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills to complete accurate calculations
  • Ability to multi-task and maintain an organized and effective personal work environment
  • Ability to work in a fluid and evolving work environment with changing deadlines and priorities
  • Ability to identify opportunities for improvement, while being open to trying new ideas and working methods
  • Ability to take responsibility for own work and ensure that deadlines are met and outcomes are achieved
  • Excellent troubleshooting ability along with hands-on expertise in technical support
  • Computer skills with the ability to learn and use relevant software, applications or equipment that achieves required outcomes
  • Basic proficiency required in Microsoft Office
  • Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
  • Familiarity with University policies and procedures preferred
