The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is the oldest and largest Maritime Museum in Canada. The Museum is a valuable historical, cultural and educational institution. It is the largest site in Nova Scotia that collects and interprets various elements of Nova Scotia’s marine history. Visitors are introduced to the age of steamships, local small craft, the Royal Canadian and Merchant Navies, World War II convoys and The Battle of the Atlantic, the Halifax Explosion of 1917, and Nova Scotia’s role in the aftermath of the Titanic disaster.About Our Opportunity
We are committed to providing high quality and engaging programming & services to our public. We are looking for a Student Heritage Programming Assistant for an approximate 16-week period from mid-May to mid-September 2020. You must be willing to work flexible working hours (up to 35 hours a week over a seven-day period). Evening and weekend work.
Under the supervision of the Curator of Visitor Experience and Engagement, you will assist Museum staff to research, develop and deliver first person interpretive programs that will engage target audiences in meaningful and fun ways, and create a greater variety in museum experiences. You can channel energies to any number of presentations inspired by our rich maritime heritage.
Main Areas of work: Museum Galleries, Temporary Display Area, CSS Acadia.About You
To be successful in this role, you must be enrolled in a post-secondary institution, having preferably completed at least one year of study and you must be registered in the Young Canada Works (YCW) on-line candidate inventory (www.youngcanadaworks.gc.ca) and meet the eligibility criteria of the program.
You possess effective communication (both oral and written) and organizational skills and have computer proficiency with common software and web search engines. Interpersonal and problem-solving skills are key and the ability to work effectively in a team environment. You must also be self-motivated and able to work with limited supervision.
A passion for history and people should be demonstrated. Dramatic or other performance experience would help you in this role.
