Position Title: Food Safety & Quality Specialist
Reports to: Director of Operations
Success
A successful Food Safety & Quality Specialist excels in having attention to detail and is responsible for ensuring the site is always compliant to HACCP (Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Point). The Specialist will need to influence others by educating them on their department/site requirements. Furthermore, the implementation of continuous improvement practices to ensure delivery and productivity are within the parameters of hygiene, quality and food safety while reducing complaints/non conformances. These programs will include Food Safety Enhancement Program (FSEP) Prerequisite Programs, HACCP, GMP and other relevant programs, audits, testing, calibration, approvals, swabbing, training, records, risk assessments, inspections, sanitation program support, Integrated Pest Management and Standard Operating Procedures. Analytical analysis is required for reviewing trends and KPIs along with achieving HACCP re-certification.
The Role
The role of the Specialist is to influence and closely work with departments and external providers to ensure our Food Safety & Quality programs and practices remain current and complete. The Specialist must be hands on running their function with the leadership support from the Director of Operations.
Qualifications and Experience
· Bachelor Degree (min.) in Food Science, Microbiology, or related to Chemistry/Biochemistry.
· 5 + years experienced (catering or food manufacturing)
· Requires a strong working knowledge of HACCP, BRC/SQF and familiarity with Food Regulatory requirements in Canada and the US
· Ability to liaise with externals: CFIA inspectors, suppliers and customers
· Team player with the ability to influence and lead others
· Excellent organizational and communication skills
· Strong attention to detail
· Proficient in Microsoft applications
· Ability to work independently in a busy, multi-task environment.
· Continuous improvement, problem solving and can do attitude
· Experience in maintaining HACCP plans and Prerequisite Programs
· Relevant certifications such as PCQI, Food Fraud, Six Sigma, Food Handler, etc.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Coordinate and participate in the development of HACCP plans and prerequisite programs and takes a lead in the maintenance of the program such as monthly meetings and annual assessment
· Maintain and update facility HACCP System (prerequisite and HACCP Plans) to ensure compliance with existing or changing regulatory
· Ensure training programs are current and complete
· Update SOPs, programs and forms as necessary due to HACCP reassessments and/or program changes, etc.
· Maintain current Training material / presentation (GMP; CCP, etc)
· Perform on site & record monitoring and/or verification as per HACCP System
· Complete validation studies eg. COPs, food handling, etc.
· Conduct audits (GMP, internal programs, etc)
· Lead Mock Recalls
· Complete swabs and testings
· Perform audit verification for HACCP Plan and Prerequisites.
· Coordinate in house disposition of materials placed on hold
· Oversee pest control while working with the service provider to close out any sighting activity
· Facilitate CAPA analysis for any non-conformance or complaints
· Serve as the resource/coach for established quality/food safety standards
· Qualify any new or modified food equipment / tools meet hygienic design
· Perform other duties as assigned
