The Blue Ocean Dental Group (the “Dental Group”) is a collection of 8 dental practices located throughout Vancouver Island with over 150+ employees and 15+ dental associates.

The Director of Finance will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 9am – 5pm however additional time beyond the stated work hours is anticipated and the Dental Group will structure compensation such that additional effort, and success as a result of that effort is compensated accordingly. The successful candidate will be travelling throughout Vancouver Island and may reside and work out of an office in Victoria, Nanaimo, Campbell River or Comox.

Job Summary

As a senior member of the management team, the Director of Finance is responsible for the management and oversight of the Finance department of the Dental Group, which will include two direct reports to the Director of Finance.

The Director of Finance is also responsible for providing innovative and effective financial leadership and advice to the CEO to ensure the long-term health and growth of the Dental Group’s operations.

The Director of Finance will be responsible for evaluating opportunities, both internally as well as externally for the Dental Group and improving the overall profitability of the Dental Group by way of observing relevant financial metrics and working with the Chief Operations Officer (COO) to maintain a high quality service for the Dental Group’s patients while also maintaining profitability.

They will also be responsible for evaluating potential acquisitions for the Dental Group and working with the CEO and COO to accomplish any planned acquisition and transition of the acquired practice to the Dental Group.

The successful candidate for this position must possess outstanding strategic long and short-term financial planning, leadership and communications skills, and will be responsible for developing and maintaining a work environment that is supportive to the organization and is customer-service based.

Job Duties

  • Manage the accounting operations of the Dental Group including the review of journal entries, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable and all other internal metrics.
  • Assist with full-cycle accounting activities in absence of the Controller and / or the Financial Analyst. The position is a management position, but one where management must be able to assist whenever required and do whatever is needed to accomplish the tasks on hand.
  • Establish and monitor internal controls to ensure that accounting activities are in accordance with established legal regulatory and company policies and procedures.
  • Assisting with the preparation of operational and capital budgets and ensuring that they are followed by management of the Dental Group.
  • Assist with and oversee the preparation of monthly financial reports to the Dental Groups CEO.
  • Work with operations to define, measure, analyze, improve and control current processes which impact customer quality and influence internal operating efficiency.
  • Provide strategic analysis as required to drive improved decision making.
  • Work with external accountants, tax advisors and assurance providers.
  • Oversee the management of the Dental Groups treasury activities.
  • Prepare and present to the CEO analysis of investment opportunities for the Dental Group.
  • Work with the COO to identify cost saving opportunities for the Dental Group.
  • Ensures rapid and consistent collection of receivables by refining and implementing control mechanisms
  • Promote and maintains positive corporate relations with the financial community
  • Assist in hiring, training, mentoring and supervising accounting staff as needed.
  • Other related duties and required or assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Academic/Educational Requirements

Professional accounting designation (CPA) and a degree in a related discipline, the successful candidate will have 5+ years of experience following their completion of their CPA program in a mid size business / enterprise environment, be it with a public practice firm or within industry.

Other Certification, Licenses, Designations and/or Training

· Must possess a valid class BC driver’s license

· Proficiency with computer applications, MS Office and similar software

· Proficiency with Sage is considered an asset.
